How to Set Up a Home Office or How to Design a Home Office:: ZIDA Bhubaneswar
The Covid-19 pandemic has forced
us to work in the confines of our homes. With the rise of work-from-home
culture, having a dedicated home office space has become imperative. Even
otherwise, whether we are working from home for a short term or a long term
period or simply as an adjunct to working at the office, making our workspace
as professional as possible is important not only to avoid injuring our health
due to a faulty ergonomic setup but also to improve efficiency with the help of
right equipment and the right setup.
So... How to set up a home office?
The first step is locating the
right spot to place the workstation. It can be placed in a separate spare room,
a study room, a lounge area or an outdoor room like a shed. The room should be
free of distraction and should have enough space for working and circulating.
Next, bring in a table or desk big enough to house the computer and other
equipment depending upon the nature of the work. Add an ergonomic, adjustable
chair and a storage shelf, if needed.
The height of the desk and chair
should be such that the forearms of the person sitting in the workplace remain
parallel to the ground. This allows for the posture to remain straight, thereby
avoiding any damage to muscles, tendons and joints. The top of the screen of
the computer should be about 30% above the eye level of the user so that he/she
is looking straight most of the time while working. This prevents neck and
shoulder sprain. One can use height adjusters to set the screen at particular
levels.
Lighting can make or break a
home office design. Working in a dark space can cause eye strain; hence,
sufficient, indirect lighting is a given in a workspace. The placement of the
desk should be such that the direct glare from the daylight does not shine on
the screens. Further, add lamps and panels lights in spots where the light
falls on the workstation, and not on the screen.
Finally, we can personalise our
workstation with the choice of our accessories and collectables. One can hang
inspirational quotes on the wall, invite a houseplant or a flower vase for the
desk, a table lamp or a quirky pen stand to amp up the space, only to keep our
spirits and wellbeing in check.
