Architecture and Art Movies to Watch for Inspiration- Part 1

Now seems like the best time to defeat everyday humdrum and blues with the help of inspiriting stories, thought-provoking knowledge and stirring insights. Here’s a round-up on some iconic movies on architecture, art and design to satisfy your soul. Dig in!

The Fountainhead (1949)

Based on Ayn Rand’s 1943 novel, this American film was released by Warner Bros. This Gary Cooper starrer movie revolves around the struggling life of young architect Howard Roark who follows creative individualism in the world of rules and standards.

BIG Time (2017)

All modern architecture lovers will go gaga about this one! Designer of Danish Maritime Museum, Mountain Dwellings, 8 House and many other influencing buildings- Bjarke Ingels- showcases his own thrilling experience of working on his biggest project so far- the Two World Trade Centre at New York. The documentary gives a glimpse of how the star architect juggles between his professional life, personal life and health issues.

Volume Zero: The Work of Charles Correa (2015)

As the later part of the title suggests, this documentary is a tribute to the legendary Indian architect and urban designer Charles Correa. Director Arun Khopkar beautifully blends comprehensive information and elegant cinematography in this hour-long chronicle. I wouldn’t disclose why this documentary is interestingly named ‘Volume Zero’; go through Correa’s interview in the film to find out!

How Much Does Your Building Weigh, Mr. Foster? (2010)

The documentary ‘How Much Does Your Building Weigh, Mr. Foster?’ marks the voyage of acclaimed English architect Norman Robert Foster. Foster’s architectural brilliance is rightly portrayed by means of his colleagues’ interviews and apt building videography.

Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010)

Crime, art and comedy come together to narrate the tale of Banksy, a renowned British graffiti artist. Often misunderstood as a docucomedy, this documentary is a treat for art lovers. Besides a vibrant display of detailed art and artists at work, the film will surely intrigue you with its speculated ‘real’ footage.
