Urbanized (2011)
Urbanized- a documentary on urban planning- is the third film from the ‘Design Triology’
directed by Gary Hustwit, after Helvetica and Objectified. You will enjoy watching eminent personalities from the industry delve into the various aspects of modern urban design in this feature film.
The Human Scale (2013)
Another beautiful log of urban design, this documentary calls attention to architect Jan Gehl’s quest on making cities humanistic or human-scale. This film raises important, and often unanswered, questions on livable cities; hence it speaks not just to the architecture and design fraternity, but to city dwellers as a whole. In this movie, Tom Hiddleston plays the role of Dr. Robert Laing, a new resident of a luxury tower block. Adapted from the 1975 dystopian novel ‘High-Rise’ by J. G. Ballard, the movie shows how gradual disintegration of the tall building turns the life of its affluent inmates from cool to chaos.
This expressionist sci-fi drama got mixed responses upon release. However, the critics found the silent film ‘pictorially beautiful and visually powerful’, thanks to the scenes influenced from Bauhaus, Cubist and Futurist architecture with a dash of Gothic elements. For a movie launched in 1927, it can safely be called a technology marvel.
Nathaniel Kahn directed and produced this film to document
his father Louis I. Kahn’s exceptional career. While, at one point, you will get up close and personal with the architect’s secretive family life, interviews with Frank Gehry, Moshe Safdie, I M Pei, Anne Tyng and a few other proclaimed architects will surprise you at various moments across the documentary.
